Elementary Homeschool Curriculums

Elementary (roughly kindergarten through 5th grade) is where homeschool curriculum choices matter most and where the widest range of programs is available. Core skills — reading fluency, basic writing, foundational math facts, and an introduction to history and science — get built here, and the teaching approach you pick in these years often sets the tone for the rest of your homeschool journey. This is also the best window to experiment: elementary-level materials are generally the least expensive tier of most programs, so it’s a lower-risk time to try a literature-based, mastery-math, or online self-paced approach and see what actually fits your child before committing through the older grades. Multi-age families often find elementary the easiest stretch to teach several kids together, since unit-study and read-aloud programs (My Father’s World, Sonlight, BookShark) are explicitly built for combined learning at this level even when ages span a few years apart. Expect daily instruction time to run roughly 2–4 hours depending on the program and how independently your child can already work — some curriculums (Time4Learning, Teaching Textbooks starting at grade 3) are designed for a child to complete much of the work with only light supervision by the upper elementary years.
